Members Adopt Bylaws, Set Election Date

At a meeting on April 10, members voted overwhelmingly in favor of adopting the Bylaws proposed by our Bylaws Committee (to read the Bylaws, click "Contracts" at left).

In two other votes, members voted to hold Election 2006-1 on May 15, 2006, and to allow Absentee Balloting in the election. For more information on these votes, click "Election" at left.

New School Contract Signed

On Thursday, March 16th, our New School part-time faculty union contract was signed by members of the faculty bargaining committee, representatives of UAW Region 9A, and New School administration.

This important achievement was made possible by the collective strength of a united faculty and the courageous efforts of literally hundreds of members. As the contract itself is implemented we will continue our efforts for greater part-time faculty rights and respect, and look to you to make ACT-UAW a union that can continue to build upon our recent success. We have already begun to train grievance handlers, and will soon be electing our faculty representatives to our local union's Joint Council, which will have representatives of both New School and NYU members.

We are proud of the many accomplishments we have made, and encourage you to take an active role in our union.

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire

At noon on Friday, GSOC members will join union members from across the city at Washington and Greene Streets, on NYU's campus, for the annual Triangle Shirtwaist Fire commemoration. Each year, UNITE HERE joins with the New York City Fire Department to commemorate the 146 immigrant garment workers-mostly young women-who died in a tragic fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911 (the building is now NYU's Brown Building.) This tragedy galvanized the city to fight for labor reforms in the workplace, and remains one of the most important events in U.S. labor history.

This year marks the 95th Anniversary of the fire, and an hour-long event has been planned at the site. Speakers will include Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a UNITE HERE hotel worker, a GSOC striker, and students from schools across the city.

We encourage attendance at this event, both to come together as a union, and also to join with our labor allies throughout the city.
